Accra and Russian Embassy explore new bilateral cooperation

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Russian Embassy in Ghana are exploring new avenues for cooperation to strengthen bilateral ties. During a meeting on September 7, 2026, Russian Ambassador Andrei Ordash met with Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey to discuss partnerships in education, investment, urban development, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

Mayor Allotey expressed interest in learning from the development experiences of Russian cities, specifically citing Moscow as a model for urban planning, infrastructure, technology, and metropolitan administration. To facilitate this, the Mayor proposed establishing formal city-to-city relationships to enable structured knowledge exchange and institutional collaboration.

On the educational front, Ambassador Ordash noted that Russia has increased its scholarship offerings for Ghanaian students from 120 to 240 this year. The discussions also touched upon upcoming commemorative activities, including a proposed tree-planting exercise at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to mark the anniversary of diplomatic relations in January 2028.
