Accra beach club demolitions spark livelihood concerns

A series of dawn security operations supervised by National Security has resulted in the demolition of several beach clubs and structures along the Accra coastline. The recent exercise targeted La Pleasure Beach Resort, Polo Beach Club, Vienna City Club, and various shops, stalls, and pub sheds.

Affected business owners and vendors have expressed significant distress, noting that the sudden clearances occurred without prior notice, preventing them from salvaging belongings. Many operators emphasized that these businesses have existed for generations and serve as vital sources of income for numerous families.

Musician and businessman D-Black has joined public calls for compensation, describing the demolitions as “unfortunate.” He noted that this follows a pattern of similar clearances at Flamingo, Ula Beach, Polo Beach, and Vienna City Beach Club, raising concerns about the long-term livelihoods of workers and owners in the sector.
