Accra flood risk prompts emergency measures ahead of Homowo Festival
The Ghana Meteorological Agency warned that heavy June rains (100‑150 mm) will increase flooding in Accra, noting that as little as 30 mm can now inundate parts of the city. The agency attributes the heightened vulnerability to urbanisation, which has narrowed drainage channels and reduced natural flood‑retention areas, and to runoff from surrounding higher‑elevation communities.
In response, the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) announced intensified flood‑prevention and security actions ahead of the Homowo Festival. An emergency meeting identified several flood‑prone neighborhoods—including Odawna Sahara, Adabraka, Alajo Central, Berlin Bridge, parts of Madina and Osu—as priority zones for drainage clearance, silt removal and waste cleanup. REGSEC also directed security agencies to boost patrols around festival crowd sites and instructed the National Disaster Management Organisation to stand by for potential evacuations. Officials emphasized cooperation with residents and the importance of reporting emergencies promptly.
