Accra Flood Crisis Highlights Planning Failures and Push for AI Early‑Warning
Heavy rains in late June 2026 caused severe flooding across Accra and surrounding areas, submerging roads, homes and businesses. The National Disaster Management Organisation reported that more than 90,000 people in seven regions were affected, 34 people died and 7,761 households were displaced. The government allocated GH₵300 million, split equally between immediate relief and long‑term flood mitigation.

Technology advocates propose using artificial intelligence to improve early warning and response. AI can process satellite data, weather forecasts and sensor inputs to predict flood‑prone zones, guide pre‑emptive evacuations and help responders locate the hardest‑hit communities in real time. Integrating AI‑driven mapping with regular clean‑up efforts could make future flood mitigation more effective.
