Accra floods kill one, spark criticism of Ghana's anti‑flood taskforce
Heavy rain on 3 June 2026 caused widespread flooding in Accra, Ghana, submerging homes in neighborhoods such as Ashongman Old Town, Adabraka Sahara, Darkuman Junction, Adentan, Madina, Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Adenta New Site. The Ghana National Fire Service rescued trapped residents and reported one fatality.
The disaster has intensified public scrutiny of President John Mahama’s Anti‑Flood Taskforce, created in March 2025 to coordinate flood mitigation. The seven‑member body, chaired by Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, includes ministers for Water Resources, Local Government and the National Security Coordinator. It has conducted aerial surveys and pledged desilting of major drains with the Ghana Armed Forces. Critics argue that ineffective leadership and poor waste‑management policies, such as inadequate rubbish collection and illegal building on waterways, exacerbate the flooding problem and call for stronger local by‑laws and enforcement.
