Accra Floods Paralyze City, Residents Lose Homes and Livelihoods
Heavy rain on June 3 turned Accra, Ghana, into a virtual standstill as floodwaters swamped key roads, including the Ashaiman Underbridge, cutting major transport corridors and trapping motorists for more than five hours. The deluge overwhelmed the city's drainage system, prompting widespread water‑logging across neighborhoods such as Hatso, Agbogba and Old Ashongman.
Among the hardest‑hit residents was florist Yvonne Mensah, whose home in Old Ashongman was inundated to chest height. Furniture, electronics and personal documents were destroyed, and her family was rescued after five hours by officers from the National Disaster Management Organisation. The incident underscores the vulnerability of Accra’s infrastructure and the human toll of the flooding.
