Accra High Court schedules bail ruling for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako
The High Court in Accra has scheduled November 4, 2026, to rule on a bail application filed by Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Antwi-Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, is seeking bail pending an appeal against a 20-year prison sentence received for illegal mining.
Defense counsel Samuel Atta Akyea argued for the grant of bail, stating that Antwi-Boasiako is a person of good standing who employs hundreds of people and has consistently appeared for all court proceedings. Conversely, Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Dr. Justice Srem-Sai opposed the application, asserting that the appellant poses a flight risk.
Antwi-Boasiako has appealed both his conviction and sentence, presenting over 20 grounds for appeal. His legal team contends that the trial court misinterpreted mineral rights laws, exceeded its jurisdiction, and relied on insufficient circumstantial evidence.
