Accra International Airport implements new security screening

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has implemented enhanced security measures at Accra International Airport, requiring passengers to undergo luggage pre-screening before entering the Departure Hall. This new process, conducted by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) using scanning machines and sniffer dogs, is intended to strengthen airport security.

Due to these additional layers and rising passenger volumes, GACL advises international travelers to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled departure. Domestic passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours early. The airport has seen significant growth in traffic, with international passenger numbers rising from 2.14 million in 2023 to an estimated 2.54 million in 2025. In the first half of 2026, the airport recorded approximately 1.42 million international passengers.

These security updates follow the July deployment of new screening equipment in Terminals 2 and 3. The upgraded technology allows passengers to keep shoes, belts, and large electronic devices in their cabin baggage during routine checks, featuring an Automatic Tray Return System to improve efficiency.
