Accra Mayor leads urban enforcement and market redevelopment
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched several enforcement and redevelopment initiatives across the capital. Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has issued a one-week ultimatum to occupants of Gbagbasetey, also known as Dogo Beach, to vacate the area before scheduled demolitions. The site, originally intended as a temporary fishing landing, is being cleared to ensure public spaces conform to approved land-use arrangements.
In Bukom, the Mayor has given residents and businesses a 48-hour deadline to desilt choked gutters and clean their surroundings to improve sanitation. This move is part of a broader effort to enforce hygiene regulations and support the administration’s development agenda.
Simultaneously, a political dispute has emerged regarding the redevelopment of the Konkomba Yam Market into a 24-hour economy market. Member of Parliament Dominic Nitiwul has accused the AMA of discriminatory targeting of the Konkomba community. Mayor Allotey has rejected these claims, stating that the Assembly has engaged community leaders and that the project aims to improve conditions for traders rather than marginalize them.
