Accra Mayor pledges support for Agbogbloshie canal restoration

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has pledged support for community-led environmental restoration efforts at the June 4th Market area in Agbogbloshie. During a visit on September 24, 2026, the Mayor inspected work conducted by The Or Foundation and local volunteers to clear waste from a canal that feeds into the Korle Lagoon.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) intends to work with The Or Foundation to establish regular waste management arrangements and sustain the progress made. The Mayor noted that the initiative serves as a practical model for urban sanitation that could be replicated in other parts of the city through collaboration between local authorities, civil society, and communities.

Katia Osei, Head of Environmental Justice at The Or Foundation, reported that approximately 300 metres of the canal have been cleared following studies of the local ecosystem and historical patterns.
