Accra Metropolitan Assembly deploys taskforce to stop illegal fare hikes

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has deployed an enforcement taskforce to the Central Business District to combat illegal transport fare hikes. The initiative targets commercial drivers, including trotro, taxi, and ride-hailing operators, who have been charging passengers rates above the officially approved levels, particularly during rush hours and early morning periods.

Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey stated that these arbitrary price increases exacerbate economic hardships for commuters. The AMA intends to intensify monitoring and ensure that drivers adhere to the official fare lists authorized by regulatory bodies. Drivers found in violation of these bylaws will face prosecution in municipal courts.

In a parallel warning, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Police stated that commercial vehicle operators who deliberately charge above the rates gazetted by the Ministry of Transport risk legal action. Assistant Commissioner of Police Alexander Kweku Obeng emphasized that compliance is a responsibility to the public and that enforcement will address conduct that exploits commuters.
