Accra Metropolitan Assembly mandates commercial driver’s licences
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a reminder to drivers of commercially registered vehicles, specifically those with yellow registration plates, to obtain a commercial driver’s licence from the Assembly. This directive follows ongoing confusion between the driver’s licence and the vehicle stickers required for certain commercial activities.
According to AMA Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the commercial driver’s licence is issued to the individual driver rather than the vehicle and must be carried during commercial transport activities. This requirement is mandated under the AMA (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) By-laws, 2017. The licence is separate from the vehicle sticker displayed on the windscreen.
New applicants for the commercial driver’s licence must pay GH¢60, while the annual renewal fee is GH¢23. Drivers must hold this licence in addition to a standard licence issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). The Assembly noted that even vehicles with white number plates may require stickers if they are used for goods transport or other activities covered by Assembly permit arrangements.
