Accra Ministries enclave faces fire safety risks as 23 hydrants fail
An inspection by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and Ghana Water Limited has revealed that 23 out of approximately 30 fire hydrants in Accra’s Ministries enclave are non-functional. The findings, released ahead of the fire season, indicate that only five hydrants were fully operational with high water pressure, while two others recorded low pressure.
The enclave is a critical government district housing several key institutions, including the Ministries of Finance, Energy, Transport, and Roads, as well as the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Health Service, and the Court Complex. The lack of reliable water access in this area poses a significant risk to state infrastructure and public safety.
Regional Fire Officer ACFO II Rashid Nisawu also noted that the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) lacks a fire hydrant on its premises entirely. The GNFS is conducting these inspections as a proactive measure to identify and repair faulty equipment to strengthen emergency response capabilities.
