Accra police arrest 52 in crackdown on illegal motorcycle racing
On July 26, the Airport Divisional Police Command in Accra detained 52 motorcyclists suspected of unlawful racing on the George Walker Bush Highway near Villaggio. Police also impounded 71 motorcycles, including 25 registered Royal bikes, 26 unregistered Royals, five power bikes and 15 scooters. A statement signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng said many riders had travelled from towns such as Nsawam, Kasoa, Tema, Ashaiman and Koforidua to take part in the event, which disrupted traffic and endangered motorists and pedestrians. The suspects are being held in custody and are expected to face charges ranging from careless riding and dangerous riding to unlawful motor racing, failure to wear helmets, riding without a licence, using unregistered motorcycles and lacking compulsory insurance. The Accra Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to enforcing traffic laws and protecting road users.
