Accra Race Course demolished by armed group

The Accra Turf Club has reported a massive demolition at the Borteyman Race Course involving approximately 200 armed men. According to the Club, the group entered the premises on Saturday, August 22, led by individuals identifying themselves as Clement Dzato and Azuma.

The demolition reportedly resulted in the destruction of roughly 100 horse stables, the forcible removal of horses, and the ejection of jockeys from their residential quarters. The Club alleges that police officers were present during the incident but failed to intervene despite repeated requests to stop the destruction.

Describing the event as ‘extremely serious,’ the Accra Turf Club has appealed for urgent intervention from President John Dramani Mahama and other high-ranking government officials, including the Minister for the Interior and the Inspector-General of Police. The Club emphasized that the race course is a vital hub for Ghana’s equestrian community, supporting the livelihoods of an estimated 30,000 people.
