Accra schools pilot clean air and waste segregation project

Six senior high schools in the Greater Accra Region have been selected to pilot the Schools for Clean Air and Waste Segregation (SCAWS) project. The initiative aims to promote cleaner, more sustainable learning environments by improving waste management and reducing air pollution caused by open waste burning.

Led by Impact Footprints Africa in collaboration with the Clean Air Fund and the Ghana Education Service, the project involves Achimota School, Accra Academy, Wesley Grammar School, St. John’s Grammar School, St. Mary’s Secondary School, and Westfield Bridge College. The participating group includes five public institutions and one private school.

The program focuses on practical systems such as waste segregation, organic waste composting, and the collection of recyclables. By involving students, teachers, and school management, the project seeks to build long-term environmental habits and create a scalable model for other educational institutions. Desmond Appiah, Country Lead for the Clean Air Fund, noted that the goal is to integrate informal and circular economy actors into the process to ensure sustainability.
