Accra Sports Stadium faces engineering issues and costly floodlight repairs
The Accra Sports Stadium is facing significant engineering and maintenance challenges, according to the National Sports Authority (NSA). Acting Director-General Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong stated that repairing the stadium's floodlights could cost between GH₵1.5 million and GH₵2 million. The repair process is expected to be complex due to the height of the structures and the need for specialized equipment like cranes.
Beyond the lighting issues, the facility is dealing with broader engineering defects. While there have been calls for the stadium's demolition due to safety concerns, Prof. Sarpong clarified that demolition is not an immediate solution. Instead, the NSA is assessing whether to undergo a phased renovation or to construct an entirely new stadium.
Due to these ongoing issues, upcoming Black Stars matches, including Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, may be relocated to Essipong Stadium. The NSA is currently seeking clarification from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding these potential venue changes.
