Accra-Tema Motorway project reaches 53% completion

The Accra-Tema Motorway and Extensions Project in Ghana has reached 53% completion, with construction currently slated for finish in August 2027. While the $339 million development is slightly behind schedule due to challenges relocating utility infrastructure such as pipelines and fiber-optic cables, engineers are implementing measures to meet the deadline.

The project involves expanding the existing motorway into a combination of access-controlled expressways and urban highways, with some sections expanding to five lanes in each direction. Improvements include upgrades to interchanges at Tetteh Quarshie, Community 18, and Lashibi, as well as the construction of bridges, box culverts, and pedestrian facilities.

Managed by A. T. Expressway Limited (ATEL) through a 30-year Public-Private Partnership (PPP) concession, the project aims to reduce congestion and strengthen trade links to Tema Port. ATEL CEO Louis Harrison noted that the initiative is intended to serve as a template for financing major national infrastructure in Ghana without placing the full financial burden on the state.
