Accra Turf Club to protest Borteyman racecourse demolition
The Accra Turf Club has announced a demonstration for Thursday, September 10, to protest the demolition of the Accra Race Course at Borteyman. The club is demanding government accountability and intervention following an incident on August 22, where armed men and police officers allegedly used heavy-duty machinery to raze the facility.
The demolition reportedly destroyed approximately 100 horse stables, offices, and jockey quarters. The club further alleged that horses were forcibly removed from the premises and jockeys were ejected from their accommodations.
Accra Turf Club maintains it has a legitimate claim to the property through a relocation agreement with the government. The club is calling on President John Dramani Mahama and other senior officials to restore their access to the racecourse, remove encroachers, and launch a full independent investigation into the demolition. While one police officer involved has been interdicted pending an internal investigation, the club claims the government has yet to provide a substantive response.
