Accra waste management: Zoomlion reopens Achimota Transfer Station after floods
The Ghana government and waste‑management firm Zoomlion Ghana Limited have reopened the Achimota‑Abofu Transfer Station in the Greater Accra Region to restore waste collection services disrupted by recent floods. Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ahmed Ibrahim inspected the facility and said the move prevents a looming public‑health crisis after flooded landfill sites left thousands of tricycle waste collectors unable to dispose of refuse.
The reopening provides a temporary relief point where informal collectors can off‑load waste to be taken by larger trucks to designated disposal sites. The operation was supported by the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Security Secretariat and the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, who called for sustained government backing of transfer stations as a public good. Authorities also intend to develop a sustainable framework involving private waste companies, transfer‑station operators and informal collectors to improve sanitation resilience during emergencies.
