Accra's festive season faces scheduling and cultural challenges

Accra's annual December festive season, often referred to as ‘Detty December,’ is facing logistical and strategic challenges. Commentator Richmond Adu-Poku notes that a dense calendar of concerts, festivals, and parties is forcing fans to choose between competing events due to limited time, rising ticket prices, and heavy traffic within the city.

While the season attracts significant spending from the diaspora and tourists, contributing to Accra's status as a regional tourism hub, there are concerns regarding the sustainability of this model for local fans. Additionally, musician EL has called for a more intentional focus on Ghanaian music. He argues that the country should more deliberately promote its own talent to ensure visitors experience a distinct Ghanaian sound, rather than a generic festive atmosphere.
