At-home DNA tests, provided by major companies such as 23andMe and AncestryDNA, offer high technical accuracy for raw genetic data, with laboratory processing standards reaching between 99.5% and 99.9%. However, this precision does not necessarily extend to the accuracy of health predictions derived from that data.
These consumer tests typically analyze single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to identify broad genetic patterns. Because they screen for predetermined variants rather than performing comprehensive genetic analysis, they may miss rare or newly discovered disease-causing mutations that medical-grade testing would identify. Furthermore, different companies may report conflicting health results due to varying methodologies and reference databases.
Experts suggest that while these tests can be useful screening tools to initiate discussions with healthcare providers, they should not be used for definitive medical decisions. Environmental factors and lifestyle choices often play a more significant role in common diseases than genetic predispositions alone.
