Aceh authorities demand investigation into fatal shooting in Pidie

The Aceh provincial government and the Banda Aceh Legal Aid Institute (LBH) are calling for a thorough legal investigation following a fatal clash in Gampong Pulo Keunari, Pidie Regency. The incident, which reportedly involved Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel and local residents during a Maulid celebration, resulted in at least one death and several injuries.

LBH Banda Aceh Chairperson Aulianda Wafisah urged the regional police to investigate not only field personnel but also the commanders who deployed them. She noted that such violence appears to be part of a recurring pattern of repression against citizens expressing political views, specifically regarding the flying of the crescent and star flag. She emphasized that cases of alleged violence by military members should be handled in general courts.

Aceh Governor Muzakir Manaf and Vice Governor Fadhlullah expressed deep concern over the loss of life, urging all parties to exercise restraint to prevent broader conflict. The provincial government spokesperson, Nurlis Effendi, stated that legal enforcement must be fair and conducted within a framework of peace. Meanwhile, the Commander of Korem 011/Lilawangsa, Colonel Teuku Mustafa Kamal, stated that the military is still investigating the information regarding the incident.
