Indonesia energy sector sees new oil auctions and regulatory shifts

Indonesia's energy and mineral sectors are undergoing significant regulatory and operational shifts. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has opened eight oil and gas blocks for auction in its second phase of 2026 to boost national reserves. Additionally, the ministry has approved cooperation for 40 community oil wells in Aceh to formalize and secure local production.

To improve transparency, the government issued Regulation No. 11/2026, mandating the use of Indonesian National Standards (SNI) for quantity assurance in upstream oil and gas activities. This aims to ensure that production and distribution data are accountable and measurable.

In the corporate sector, MedcoEnergi reported solid first-half 2026 performance, with oil and gas production reaching 170,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The company also noted growth in its electricity segment, supported by renewable energy projects. Meanwhile, the upcoming Enlit Asia event in Jakarta is expected to address rising electricity demands driven by industrial growth and data center expansion across the ASEAN region.
