Aceh flooding impacts thousands and destroys infrastructure

Heavy rainfall has triggered significant flooding across several regions in Aceh, Indonesia, causing widespread damage to infrastructure and affecting thousands of residents.

In Southeast Aceh, flooding in 12 villages across six districts has impacted approximately 1,324 people. The surge in the Lawe Bulan, Lawe Kisam, and Lawe Kinga rivers, driven by high-intensity rain, caused river embankments to breach and brought debris such as wood and stones into residential areas. While water and mud entered homes, no casualties or displacements have been reported. The Aceh Disaster Management Agency (BPBA) has deployed rapid response teams and heavy equipment to monitor the receding waters.

In Southwest Aceh, flash floods have completely destroyed a bridge in Gampong Adan, Tangan-Tangan District. This bridge served as the sole access point connecting residents to irrigation dams and plantation lands. The Public Works and Spatial Planning Office (PUPR) reported severe damage, noting that the roadbed and bridge foundations collapsed into the river. Local authorities are prioritizing the construction of emergency and permanent access to restore economic activity for local farmers and plantation workers.
