Acerra authorities report security risks from tampered electronic ID cards

Authorities in Acerra, Italy, have raised security alarms following the discovery of electronic identity cards (CIE) with their microchips surgically removed. This marks the third such incident recorded in a few days in the region.

Carabinieri officers discovered the most recent case during a routine patrol, leading to the seizure of a document and the reporting of an individual for possession of the tampered ID. The removal of the chip is described as being performed with extreme precision, suggesting it is not the result of accidental damage.

The microchip is a critical component of the CIE, containing personal and biometric data used for digital authentication and secure access to online services. While some social media theories link chip removal to concerns over digital tracking, law enforcement officials emphasize that the primary security risk involves identity fraud and the compromise of digital identification systems.
