Acetaminophen use in pregnancy not linked to autism or ADHD

Two recent studies have addressed concerns regarding the use of acetaminophen (paracetamol) during pregnancy. An analysis of health records from the Hong Kong Hospital Authority covering over 120,000 children found no increased risk of autism or ADHD diagnoses linked to prenatal exposure to the medication.

The research, which examined data from 2001 to 2023, noted that findings remained consistent regardless of the trimester in which the drug was taken or the mother's age. Researchers emphasized that paracetamol remains a safe and essential option for managing pain and fever, warning that avoiding it could lead to the use of more harmful alternatives like opioids or NSAIDs.

However, a separate study conducted in Denmark suggested potential long-term reproductive impacts. The findings indicated that female infants whose mothers used acetaminophen during pregnancy exhibited smaller ovaries and uteruses, as well as lower levels of reproductive hormones. While these changes could potentially lead to fertility issues later in life, researchers advised pregnant women to consult with medical professionals regarding their use of the medication.
