Achaia, Greece launches €4 million flood protection projects after 2025 wildfires

The Region of Western Greece approved €4 million of flood‑prevention works in the fire‑scarred areas of Achaia. Regional Governor Nektarios Farmakis signed contracts funded by the Regional Development Programme. The main €2.5 million scheme will reinforce riverbeds of the Meilichos, Karava, Girokomeio and Malamouti streams in the municipality of Patras, adding small dams, reinforced concrete walls and sediment‑catching structures over roughly 24 km. A second €1.5 million project will treat the Tsoukaleika and Vrachnaiki catchments across Patras, Western Achaia and Ermanto, covering about 8.5 km with cleaning, wire‑mesh reinforcements and bridge‑foundation protection. The interventions aim to restore damaged waterways, reduce erosion and prevent future flooding that intensified after the August 2025 wildfires stripped vegetation from the basins.
