Achango chapel serves as a historic landmark in San Juan

Achango, a small settlement located 15 km south of Rodeo in the San Juan province of Argentina, is centered around a historic chapel that has been a National Historic Monument since 1997. The current structure, presumed to date from 1787, features traditional adobe walls, lime-washed mud, and carob wood beams. While the original Jesuit chapel was constructed around 1655, the present building remains a significant religious site.

The settlement, which was historically a productive area for cereal cultivation and livestock, is currently inhabited by the Montesinos family, who serve as caretakers of the site. The chapel houses an image of the Virgin of Carmen, brought from Cusco, which attracts many devotees during patronal festivals in July. The interior is notable for its artisanal textiles, including pieces woven decades ago by local residents.
