Germany: Autumn wildlife support and foraging safety tips
As autumn approaches, experts are providing guidance on interacting with nature and supporting local wildlife in Germany.
For gardeners, the Landesbund für Vogelschutz (LBV) recommends leaving natural food sources such as seed-bearing plants, dried grasses, and fallen fruit like rose hips or hawthorn to support birds during winter. Creating wild corners and leaving leaf piles can also provide essential habitats for insects, hedgehogs, and amphibians.
Regarding foraging, nutrition experts from the Verbraucherzentrale Bayern warn that while acorns and beech nuts are nutritious, they should not be eaten raw. Acorns contain tannins that can cause gastrointestinal issues, and beech nuts contain the mildly toxic substance fagin. However, they can be made edible through soaking or roasting.
In terms of insect conservation, the Bavarian State Office for the Environment notes that while wasp and hornet nests can be removed once they are no longer inhabited in autumn, certain species are protected. Inhabitants should be cautious of fines for disturbing active nests.
