Achraf Hakimi to face rape trial after French court rejects appeal

Achraf Hakimi, the Moroccan defender for Paris Saint-Germain, will stand trial for rape after France’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, rejected his final appeal to dismiss the charges. The ruling, issued on September 23, 2026, exhausts all legal avenues for Hakimi to avoid a criminal trial.

The case stems from an incident in February 2023, when a 24-year-old woman alleged that Hakimi sexually assaulted her at his residence in Boulogne-Billancourt after they met on Instagram. The complainant’s lawyer, Rachel-Flore Pardo, stated that her client is determined to seek justice and hopes the trial will challenge the culture of impunity regarding sexual violence in professional football.

Hakimi has consistently denied the allegations, maintaining that any physical contact was consensual. His defense team noted that the Court of Cassation did not examine the substance of the allegations, which will be addressed during the trial. Kylian Mbappé, a former teammate of Hakimi at PSG, may be called as a witness. The trial is expected to take place in the Hauts-de-Seine department, though a specific date has not yet been set.
