Achtkarspelen council supports emergency asylum reception decision
A majority of the Achtkarspelen municipal council has expressed formal support for the local executive and mayor following controversy regarding temporary emergency asylum reception at the Surventohal in Surhuisterveen. Five political factions—CDA, ChristenUnie, FNP, Gemeentebelangen, and PRO Achtkarspelen—issued a joint statement representing 16 of the 21 council seats.
The emergency reception was established following an urgent request from the ministry to provide additional capacity due to pressure on asylum centers in Ter Apel and Nieuwe Pekela. The council members clarified that the executive was authorized to make this decision independently and that the council had been properly informed, countering claims that they had been bypassed.
The parties noted that the decision has been subject to significant public debate, including demonstrations and personal attacks against local administrators. They emphasized that this temporary emergency measure is separate from the ongoing political discussion regarding the national distribution law (Spreidingswet).
