ACI World calls for modernization of airport slot system

ACI World has released a white paper calling for the modernization of the global airport slot allocation system. The trade association argues that the current regulatory framework, designed over 50 years ago, is outdated and forces the aviation industry into inefficient compromises.

According to the report, the number of congested, slot-restricted airports has increased by more than 25% over the last decade. With global passenger traffic projected to nearly double by the mid-2040s, ACI World warns of an accelerating capacity crisis.

Director General Justin Erbacci stated that the industry is attempting to operate a modern aviation sector using a ‘1970s operating system.’ He noted that inflexible rules prevent the industry from meeting passenger demands, offering competitive fares, and building resilient networks. The association is urging regulators to collaborate with the industry to upgrade these systems to ensure socio-economic competitiveness and connectivity.
