ACI World urges government investment to meet record airport traffic
ACI World has called on governments to prioritize airport capacity as a national economic necessity to prepare for significant growth in air travel. During the ACI-LAC World Annual General Meeting in Lima, the organization highlighted that the aviation sector may require approximately $4.6 trillion in investment by 2055 to meet projected demand.
ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci emphasized that addressing this challenge requires more than just constructing new facilities; it involves maximizing existing infrastructure, improving coordination with airlines and air navigation service providers, and modernizing slot and market access frameworks. The organization noted that slot allocation is a strategic public interest issue that impacts economies for years.
Data from ACI World indicates that global airport traffic is expected to reach a record 9.8 billion passengers in 2025. This growth is driven by a projected 6.1% increase in international traffic, with the strongest regional growth expected in Africa at 9%, followed by the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. Additionally, air cargo is forecasted to reach a record 131.2 million tons, representing a 3.3% increase.
