Aécio Neves announces Senate candidacy for Minas Gerais

Aécio Neves, president of the PSDB, has announced his candidacy for the Senate in Minas Gerais for the 2026 elections. This decision marks a significant reversal from his earlier announcement in August, when he stated he would not seek elective office to focus on party reconstruction.

Neves' entry into the race is made possible by the withdrawal of previous candidates, including Marcelo Heringer (PDT) and Gustavo Galassi (PSDB). Under electoral law, candidates can be replaced until 20 days before the election in the event of a resignation.

Neves will join the electoral slate led by Alexandre Kalil (PDT) for the governorship of Minas Gerais. He cited the state's critical financial situation and its massive debt to the Union as primary motivations for his return. If elected, Neves intends to form a Senate caucus of indebted states to advocate for more realistic debt renegotiation terms through the Propag program.
