Aécio Neves positions for presidential run with support from Tasso Jereissati and Ciro Gomes

Former Minas Gerais governor Aécio Neves is re‑emerging on the national political stage, seeking a presidential candidacy backed by centrist leaders Tasso Jereissati and Ciro Gomes. The two politicians, who previously condemned Neves during earlier corruption scandals, are now rallying behind his bid as a potential republican pact to calm Brazil’s deep political polarization.

Neves, still linked to the JBS scandal and other investigations, reportedly consulted former president Michel Temer, who advised him to propose a broad “republican pact” to restore national unity. The former president warned that breaking the current polarization would be difficult. The move follows Neves’ dramatic electoral decline—from 51 million votes in the 2014 presidential runoff to just over 100 thousand in a recent deputy race—yet he continues to gather support from party factions and key figures ahead of the next election cycle.
