ACLU seeks FCC records over early ABC license renewals

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking internal Federal Communications Commission (FCC) records regarding the agency’s decision to mandate early license renewals for eight ABC-owned stations. The stations, which include major markets such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia, would not have been due for renewal until 2027 or 2028.

The ACLU alleges that the FCC’s stated rationale for the accelerated review may be a pretext for retaliating against ABC due to content disliked by the Trump administration. The request seeks communications involving Disney, ABC, and administration officials to determine if the move was intended to chill protected speech. This follows President Trump’s criticism of ABC host Jimmy Kimmel.

FCC Chairman Carr has denied that the decision was influenced by political pressure, stating instead that the accelerated reviews are connected to an examination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices at Disney and ABC. The agency maintains the move is intended to ensure broadcasters meet their public-interest obligations.
