Acne types and causes explained
Acne is a common skin condition occurring when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. It can manifest on various parts of the body, most frequently the face, back, chest, and shoulders.
Common types of acne include whiteheads, which are closed pores; blackheads, which are open pores that oxidize; papules, which are red and inflamed; and pustules, which contain pus. More severe forms include nodules, which are deep and painful, and cystic acne, which carries a higher risk of scarring.
Triggers for breakouts often include excess sebum production and the buildup of dead skin cells and impurities within the pores.
