Sinaloa citizens march for peace following wave of violence and murders
Sinaloa has experienced a surge in violence, with at least 10 people murdered on Saturday, September 12, across Culiacán, Mazatlán, and Escuinapa. The killings occurred amidst an ongoing two-year conflict between the 'Los Chapitos' and 'Los Mayos' factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, a dispute that has resulted in over 3,000 deaths.
In response to the instability, an estimated 50,000 citizens participated in a massive peace march in Culiacán on Sunday. The demonstration, which included families of victims, business leaders, and civil organizations, moved from La Lomita to the Cathedral. Participants, many dressed in white, demanded security and an end to the violence that has fundamentally altered daily life in the region.
During the same period, a major security operation involving the Mexican Army and state police took place in the Isla Musalá sector of Culiacán. Authorities seized seven vehicles and two houses suspected of being used as safe houses following an anonymous report of armed individuals. The operation occurred near the residence of the licensed governor, Rubén Rocha Moya, though no official link to his home was established.
