Dogs are able to identify individual automobiles by their unique sound signatures. Their hearing extends to about 45 kHz, allowing them to detect subtle frequencies from engine revolutions, transmission whine, wheel bearing wear and cabin vibrations that humans cannot hear. When a familiar vehicle is replaced with a different one, the dog often fails to react, indicating the behavior is driven by acoustic recognition rather than any paranormal sense.
