Acre approves IPVA exemption for new cars; federal bill seeks IPI relief for seniors

The state of Acre signed a law exempting the first-year IPVA tax for new vehicles purchased between 1 and 31 August 2026. Governor Mailza Assis signed the decree, which applies to private buyers acquiring cars from Acre‑based dealerships or intermediaries and requires first‑time registration. The measure aims to boost auto sales during the Expoacre trade fair and increase tax revenues despite the temporary tax loss.

Separately, a federal proposal under Bill PL 2937/2020 would remove the IPI tax on new car purchases for Brazilian citizens aged 60 and over. The draft, still pending approval in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, would require seniors to obtain authorization before dealers can apply the exemption. If passed, the IPI cut would lower vehicle prices, though other taxes such as ICMS and PIS/COFINS would remain.
