Acre, Brazil Showcases TB Project Success as New Cases Rise Above 500

A tuberculosis control project from Sena Madureira, Acre, was chosen to represent the state at the national SUS health‑care showcase. The initiative, carried out in the Evaristo de Moraes prison, achieved 100 % treatment adherence, 100 % cure and zero abandonments, a result praised by municipal health officials who highlighted the coordinated effort of surveillance teams and the mayor's commitment to universal health access.

In 2025 the state reported 502 new TB cases, an incidence rate exceeding the national average of 39.7 per 100 000. Rio Branco accounted for 285 of those cases and recorded 34 deaths in 2024, most among adults. The figures place Acre’s TB burden above the national mean but below neighboring Amazon states. Health authorities emphasized continued active case finding, early diagnosis and monitoring, especially for vulnerable groups such as prisoners, the elderly and children.
