Acre court orders acceleration of leprosy victim certification

The 1st Public Treasury Court of Rio Branco has ordered the Government of Acre to accelerate the certification process for victims of leprosy and their children who were subjected to compulsory segregation. The ruling follows a civil public action filed by the Public Ministry of the State of Acre (MPAC).

The court identified administrative delays in implementing State Law No. 3,407/2018, which grants the right to certification for those affected by historical isolation policies. Although the law was enacted in 2018, its regulation only occurred in September 2025, and the state commission responsible for analyzing cases was still in the organizational phase as of August 2026.

As part of the decision, the state must publish the updated composition of the State Evaluation Commission within 15 days. Additionally, the government has 30 days to present a detailed schedule and an emergency work plan with weekly goals to process accumulated administrative requests. The court established that priority must be given to applicants aged 80 or older and those with serious illnesses.
