Acre court orders state to provide mastectomy for transgender man

A court in Acre has ordered the state government to guarantee a masculinizing mastectomy for a transgender man who had been waiting on the Unified Health System (SUS) waiting list. The procedure was medically indicated as part of a gender affirmation process.

The decision was obtained through a legal action filed by the Public Ministry of the State of Acre (MPAC). The MPAC had been monitoring the case since March, noting that the patient had already completed the necessary medical and psychological evaluations. Although the Acre State Health Secretariat (Sesacre) confirmed the patient was in the regulation system, they reported no available vacancies or timeline for the surgery.

Under the injunction, the State of Acre has a maximum of 30 days to provide an updated pre-operative evaluation if required and to designate a public, contracted, or partnered facility to perform the surgery. The MPAC emphasized that the procedure is not for aesthetic purposes but is a recognized component of gender affirmation treatment provided by the SUS.
