Brazilian parties convene to nominate candidates for 2026 elections

Across Brazil, multiple political parties held state conventions in late July 2026 to formalise their candidate slates for the upcoming general elections. The Liberal Party (PL) confirmed Douglas Ruas as its governor candidate for Rio de Janeiro and registered Rebeca Ramagem as a federal deputy candidate from the same state. Republicanos officially nominated former governor Anthony Garotinho for the Rio de Janeiro governorship. The Republicanos also endorsed Amom Mandel’s pre‑candidacy for re‑election to the Chamber of Deputies representing Amazonas. Podemos listed 77 names for federal and state legislative seats and pledged support to Luciano Zucco for the Rio de Janeiro governorship. The MDB mobilised more than 200 caravans in Maranhão to endorse Orleans Brandão for governor and Edivaldo Holanda Júnior for vice‑governor, while the PT‑led Federation Brazil of Hope announced Cadu de Lula as its candidate for the Rio Grande do Norte governorship. Large gatherings were also reported, including a PT‑led base convention in Teresina that expects over 30 000 attendees. These events mark the final stage of candidate selection ahead of the October 2026 ballot.
