Extreme heat and weather alerts impact Brazil and Portugal FAST-MOVING
Extreme weather conditions are impacting Brazil and Portugal. In Brazil, heatwaves and low humidity are causing significant risks. In Goiás, temperatures have reached 41.4°C, increasing the danger of wildfires and health issues. Experts, including Renata Libonati from UFRJ, warn that heatwaves are a neglected disaster in Brazil. Data from the SUS indicates that between 2000 and 2020, approximately 50,000 deaths in 14 metropolitan regions were linked to heatwaves, a figure 20 times higher than deaths from landslides in the same period. The El Niño phenomenon is expected to intensify these conditions, potentially leading to exceptionally high temperatures in 2026.
In Portugal, the IPMA has issued yellow alerts for heat across several districts, including Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, Beja, and Faro. Maximum temperatures in regions such as Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, and Beja are expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, parts of Southern Brazil are experiencing storms and cooler temperatures due to a cold front, creating a sharp climatic contrast with the dry, hot conditions in the Central-West region.
