Acre resumes living donor kidney transplants after 11 years

The state of Acre has resumed living donor kidney transplants after an 11-year hiatus. The procedure was conducted at the Fundação Hospitalar Governador Flaviano Melo (Fundhacre) in Rio Branco through a partnership between the Hospital do Rim Acre and the Acre Government.

The transplant involved 14-year-old Lucas Linhares, who suffered from chronic renal failure, and his 41-year-old uncle, Jean Carlos, who acted as the living donor. The surgery was successful, and both the donor and recipient are recovering well.

Dr. Jarinne Nasserala, the technical lead for the transplant program, described the event as a historic milestone, noting that living donor transplants had not been performed in the state since 2015. Currently, approximately 50 chronic patients in the region are awaiting transplants.
