Acre resumes living kidney transplants with uncle-to-nephew donation

The state of Acre has resumed living donor kidney transplants following a successful procedure at the Fundação Hospitalar Governador Flaviano Melo (Fundhacre). The surgery involved 41-year-old Jean Carlos, who donated a kidney to his 14-year-old nephew, Lucas Linhares.

Lucas, a native of Tarauacá, had been battling chronic renal failure and undergoing hemodialysis. Both the donor and the recipient are reported to be recovering well after the procedure.

Health authorities and the hospital administration are using this milestone to promote organ donation awareness, particularly in the North Region of Brazil, where there is a noted scarcity of donors. Officials emphasized the importance of informing family members of one's wish to be a donor, as family authorization is required for the process.
