Acre's disability rate and youth poverty remain high, study finds

The 2022 Brazilian census recorded 58,983 people with disabilities in the state of Acre, representing 7.3% of residents aged over two, a share that closely matches the national average of 7%. A separate analysis of social mobility shows that young Acreans born into low‑income families face one of the greatest difficulties in Brazil to break the poverty cycle. In the municipality of Assis Brasil, 84.4% of such youths remain in the poorest income quartile as adults, while only 8.32% move into the top 25% and a mere 1.28% reach the top 10% of earners. Nationwide, 48% of people who start in the lowest income quintile stay there in adulthood. The findings come from the Atlas of Social Mobility, produced by the Institute for Mobility and Development Social (IMDS) in partnership with Prospera Lab, tracking about 7 million Brazilians born between 1983 and 1990. The data underline persistent regional inequality in Brazil's North and Northeast and the need for targeted public‑policy interventions in education, employment and accessibility.
