Acre's political elite tied to former Frente Popular despite promises of change

Analysts note that the leading figures of Acre's current government—Governor Tião Bocalom, Senator Alan Rick, Senator Gladson Cameli and Senator Sérgio Petecão—share political origins in the former Frente Popular do Acre (FPA). Their careers were built during the administrations of Jorge Viana, Binho Marques and Tião Viana, indicating continuity rather than the rupture they publicly claim.

Pre‑candidate Eudo Rafael of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) criticized the FPA, saying it “had no future” and merely managed the state without delivering structural reforms. He argued that the right‑wing coalition now in power “continues the same economic practices” and offers “the dream of continuing, not changing.” Rafael’s remarks underscore the perception that the alleged shift to a new political direction is largely cosmetic.
